Paddy harvest
The paddy harvest happens for 20 days every November. The paddy plant is cut with a curved knife called a scythe. Then the seeds are separated from the stalks, boiled, and turned into rice.
This man is called Gangadhar Majhi. He works as a farm labourer from June to November and then goes to the brick-kilns for six months. He has a nine-year-old son called Umakanta Majhi who goes to the RCC, and a two-year-old son called Akash who goes with him and his wife to the brick-kilns. When Akash is older he will join his brother at the RCC.
"We're not getting enough in Khalipathar and we're forced to go to the brick-kilns. Only one person in the family can get work in the winter and that doesn't feed us all. I'm really happy with the RCC because before there was no way to protect the children from life at the brick-kilns. Now they can stay and learn."
