There are five hundred families in Khalipathar. 40 to 50% of these are forced to leave the village to work in the brick-kilns every winter. That is about 250 families.
Khalipathar can get very busy. The people wake up at five o'clock every morning and by 6 o'clock the streets are full of people and animals.
Most people plant Tulsi shrubs outside their homes. This is a sacred plant for Hindu people and is believed to protect houses. It is also a herb. Many of the villages eat two leaves every morning on an empty stomach and have never had a cold!
