ActionAid's work
I went to see some of ActionAid's work in the mountains of the Far West. About 88,000 people live here and it's where Christopher Columbus first landed. The land in this area is so dry that it's really difficult to grow anything, but many people have no other jobs and have to survive on the little they grow.
People often have to cope with just one meal a day. ActionAid is helping people plant trees and make the soil more fertile so that more food crops will grow. The rainfall in the area is really unpredictable- one year there's hurricanes and floods, the next a drought.
ActionAid are working on a system to collect and store rainwater. Women in the area can also get small loans from ActionAid to help them buy animals and set up in business.
I then went to see ActionAid's work in the slums around Port-au-Prince. Here people struggle in a different way to the people in the Far West. The slums are dirty and overcrowded with open sewers and lots of crime. People don't usually have land to farm and so have to earn an income to buy food. Many children are forced to work, but ActionAid helps run schools so that these children can also get an education.
