Physical geography Haiti is found in the Caribbean at the western end of the island of Hispaniola. The Dominican Republic occupies the other two thirds of the island. Hispaniola is the second biggest island in the carribean. Haiti mean mountainous land in Arawak, and it's certainly that. It used to be covered in forests but most of these have been cut down for fuel and to clear land for crops. Only 2% of the forests are still standing. Haiti has two rainy seasons - April to May and September to October. I went in July thinking that I would be fine, and then found out that June to September is hurricane season. I was lucky and didn't see one, but you never know when they are going to strike. The temperature is pretty stable though, 30-34ºC throughout the year. Parc Macaya is Haiti's most popular national park and it's beautiful with mountains, rainforest and stunning views. There are loads of different plants including 600 types of fern and 300 orchids. I even dragged myself up the highest mountain, Pic Macaya (2347m), and I'm so glad I did. It felt like being on top of the world. When I came back down to earth I went to the Bassins Bleu and saw the three deep blue pools and waterfalls. I didn't see the water nymphs, but I was told that was because I was too noisy! Haiti has some great beaches and most are surrounded by coral reefs. I was glad I'd learnt to scuba dive as I was able to go down 200m to the Zombie hole and see the Elephant's ear which is the world's largest sea sponge!
